Godstone Sinkholes: Major Incident Declared as Second Pit Opens Up

A state of emergency has been declared in Godstone, Surrey, after a second massive sinkhole appeared on the High Street, deepening the crisis that has already forced dozens of residents to evacuate. The situation has left the community shaken, with authorities racing to assess the damage and prevent further collapses.

The first sinkhole emerged late Monday night, rapidly expanding to approximately 20 meters wide by Tuesday afternoon. Residents reported hearing loud cracks before sections of the road caved in, exposing deep underground voids. By the next day, a second sinkhole appeared, raising serious concerns about the stability of the area.

Emergency services quickly set up a 100-meter cordon, evacuating around 30 homes due to the risk of gas explosions and structural collapses. Many displaced residents were forced to find alternative accommodation, with some even sleeping in their cars.

Initial reports suggest that the sinkholes may have been triggered by a burst water main, which could have eroded underground soil layers, weakening the foundation of the road. SES Water has since addressed the burst and restored water supply to affected homes, but the damage has already been done.

Godstone’s High Street remains completely closed, with traffic diversions in place as engineers and emergency responders work to stabilize the situation.

Drone footage captured over the site shows a gaping crater, swallowing large sections of the street, with jagged asphalt and debris surrounding the edges. These visuals highlight the sheer scale of destruction, reinforcing the urgent need for safety measures and long-term infrastructure repairs.

Local authorities, led by the Surrey Local Resilience Forum, are monitoring the situation closely. Structural engineers are conducting further investigations to determine whether more sinkholes could appear in the area. In the meantime, residents are being urged to stay away from the affected zone until it is deemed safe.
